Manmeet Alisher cremated at native village in Punjab

SANGRUR – Manmeet Alisher, the 29-year-old bus driver from Punjab who died in the Australian city of Brisbane when a man hurled an incendiary device at him and set him alight in front of other passengers, was cremated at his native village around 11 in the morning on Friday.

Sangrur MP Bhagwant Maan, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Arishdeep Singh Thind were among the hundreds who attended his last rites on Friday. Prominent Punjab singer Kanwar Grewal was also present at the cremation ground.

Alisher, an aspiring singer, hailed from Punjab’s Sangrur and had moved to Australia nine years ago on a student visa.

He started a restaurant called Desi Flavours and drove a bus for the Brisbane City Council.

His family is associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal and Alisher hosted politicians such as AAP MP Bhagwant Mann and Akali leaders when they visited Brisbane.
