Tensions erupted in Ambala on Thursday after members of the Sikh community blocked National Highway 44 (NH-44) amid protests connected to the recent incident at Gurdwara Sri Panjokhra Sahib.
The demonstration escalated near the Jaggi City Centre area, with police eventually using tear gas and lathi-charge to disperse protesters and reopen the highway, according to reports.
Why Were Sikhs Protesting in Ambala?
The latest protest stems from an incident at Panjokhra Sahib on August 7 involving Gursimran Singh Mand, president of the International Anti-Khalistan Front.
According to reports, Mand was allegedly attacked and his vehicle damaged following a confrontation at Panjokhra Sahib. Four people, including two police personnel, were reported injured during that incident.
Police subsequently arrested Sikh youths in connection with the alleged assault.
The arrests triggered anger among sections of the Sikh community, who gathered to demand action they considered fair and impartial in the case.
The Times of India reports that police have also registered an FIR against Mand and his son containing attempted-murder charges.
NH-44 Blocked for Hours
The protest moved onto the crucial NH-44 highway in Ambala, causing major disruption to traffic.

Police used tear-gas shells and a lathi-charge while attempting to disperse the gathering and restore traffic on NH-44.
At least six police personnel were reported injured during the confrontation. One of the most serious reported injuries involved a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), whose thumb was severed during the violence.
Injuries among protesters have also been reported.
The incident has generated significant attention on social media, with videos and images purportedly showing the confrontation circulating online.
