NEW DELHI (July 11, 2014) : The Delhi High Court today issued a direction to Tihar Jail Superintendent to provide proper medical care to Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara, who has been serving life imprisonment in Punjab CM Beant Singh’s assassination case.
A bench of Justice Pratibha Rani also said that the jail authority should take him to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), after his counsel alleged that Hawara is in “critical condition” and the officials have been making excuses for denying the medical treatment.
During the hearing, CBI today opposed Hawara’s plea saying that he is undergoing treatment inside Tihar jail and the doctors are also visiting him regularly.
The agency also claimed that if Hawara is taken to AIIMS, he may flee from their custody. The court, however turned down CBI’s submission and said if the man is not well, he should be given treatment in “proper security”.
Hawara, in his plea, has said he has a serious back pain and he can barely stand for a few minutes without support “Not giving treatment to him (Hawara) is a clear violation of human rights,” Hawara’s counsel said.
Bhai Hawara also informed SOPW that as of yesterday he had been admitted to the hospital wing of Tihar Jail, although in the evening he was brought back to sleep in his cell.
Those who were present inside the court were three member committee consisting of Harminder Singh of USM, Iqbal Singh and Paramjit Singh Chandhok ji. Bhai Baldev Singh ji from AKJ was there to supervise the efforts as the team was set to work under him.
Akhand Kirtani Jatha Cheif, Bhai Baldev Singh has demanded investigations into the role of jail administration for denying proper and timely medical treatment to Jagtar Singh Hawara.
