Woman struck by garbage truck in CBD

A GARBAGE truck driver has been arrested after running into a young woman in the CBD early on Sunday morning.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was walking near the corner of Elizabeth St and Lonsdale St when she was hit by a garbage truck at 4.40am.

Police were called to the scene but the truck had already driven off.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said the victim was in a critical condition.

Police later arrested a 40-year-old Wallan man.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Leading Snr-Constable Julie-Anne Newman said he was assisting police with their inquiries.

Investigators were checking CCTV footage to determine how the crash happened.

Two other women were believed to have been at the scene and police urged them to come forward.
