As many as 50,000 people awoke this morning to find their homes without power after the severe weather uprooted trees and brought down powerlines, causing widespread damage.

Meteorology experts said the winds were the worst to hit Melbourne since 2008 but warned residents were not out of the woods yet, with a severe weather warning still in place for some parts of the state.

“We’re trying to save as much of the property as we can because without a roof and rain coming, we fully expect the inside ceilings will collapse,” SES spokesman Cameron MacKay told a Channel 9 reporter.

Neighbour Chris McLeod said he considered himself lucky to escape after the structure landed on his home while he slept inside.

“It felt like a war zone. It was just the most ungodly crash – it was terrifying,” he said.

“When I looked out the window and saw the debris, I assumed that the roof of my house had been torn off.”

The State Emergency Service has received more than 1800 calls for help since midnight, with fallen trees causing much of the damage.

Northcote, Brunswick, Altona, Broadmeadows, Frankston, Melton and Moorabbin were among the worst hit suburbs.

An SES spokesman said power has been restored to as many as 27,000 homes so far.
