Victorian premier Dan Andrews Resigns after nine years in power

In a surprising turn of events, Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has announced his resignation after nearly nine years as the premier and three consecutive election victories.

Andrews made this unexpected announcement during a press conference held early on Tuesday afternoon. He revealed that his resignation would become effective at 5 pm on Wednesday, marking the end of his tenure.

During the press conference, Andrews acknowledged that the decision was not an easy one.

He stated, “As much as we have accomplished together, there’s still much more to be done. However, when the time comes, it’s time.”

He shared that thoughts about life after this demanding position had started to enter his mind during recent conversations with his family. He expressed, “I’ve always known that when this moment arrives, it’s time to step aside and pass on this privilege and immense responsibility to someone else.”

Dan Andrews, who assumed office in December 2014 at the age of 51, has been a polarizing figure in state leadership. He gained notoriety for implementing some of the strictest COVID lockdown measures in the country, although he secured a resounding victory in the November 2022 election, despite criticism. Andrews emphasized that his focus had never been on being universally popular, and he recently arrived at the decision to resign. He stated, “I am worse than a workaholic,” as his every waking moment had been consumed by his role. He admitted to uncertainty about his future plans and expressed a desire to take a break.

Andrews clarified that when he had previously committed to serving the full parliamentary term, it was a genuine intention, but his perspective had evolved over time. The state caucus is scheduled to convene on Wednesday to select a new premier, with Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan emerging as a leading candidate. Andrews confirmed his intention to participate in the voting process if a ballot was required.

He also mentioned that he had spoken with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who expressed surprise at the news. Andrews expressed gratitude to Albanese for their partnership.

This announcement follows the unexpected resignation of another longstanding Labor premier, Mark McGowan, earlier this year in Western Australia. Prime Minister Albanese characterized Dan Andrews as a man of strong convictions, immense compassion, and a resolute determination to bring about positive change.
