Victorian Labor promises new hospital in Melbourne West

VICTORIAN Labor will build a women’s and children’s hospital in Melbourne’s west if it wins this month’s election.

THE $200 million stand-alone centre will provide services for families in the west, allowing for up to 2000 extra births a year.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews was joined by federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten at Sunshine Hospital to make the pledge on Wednesday.

BERWICK will be get intensive care beds under an Andrews government, as part of a $106m Labor promise to upgrade to Casey Hospital.

The hospital, which services one of the fastest-growing areas of Melbourne, will also get a new eight-storey inpatient unit, four new operating theatres and a surgery recovery centre if Labor is elected.

Labor also said it would build a comprehensive breast cancer centre at Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood East. Under the policy, Labor would be committed to spending $10m on the first stage of the Maroondah Breast Cancer Centre, to be located opposite the hospital.
