In a historic gesture of recognition, the Victorian Government has renamed Berwick’s iconic Springs lake to Guru Nanak Lake in honor of the Sikh community and its enduring contributions to Victoria. This landmark decision, the first of its kind in Australia, on the 555th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji, reflects the values of inclusivity and multiculturalism embraced by the state and celebrates the teachings of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, known for his message of universal compassion, equality, and selfless service.

At an inauguration ceremony attended by Victorian Multicultural Minister Ingrid Stitt, and Sonya Kilkenny – Minister for Planning of Victoria, other local MPs, Victorian Multicultural Commission CEO Viv Nguyen, local officials, and members of the Sikh community, the renaming was celebrated with traditional ceremony, prayers, and speeches that paid homage to the rich Sikh history in Australia. “This is more than just a renaming; it’s a symbol of unity and a tribute to the Sikh community’s unwavering spirit of service,” said Premier Allan.

The Sikh community in Victoria has long been known for its contributions to healthcare, education, and community welfare, notably stepping up to provide food relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Victoria’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs commended the community’s enduring support and commitment to Australian society, emphasizing that Guru Nanak Lake will serve as a reminder of the bonds between different cultures in the state.

Community leaders expressed heartfelt gratitude for this honor, viewing it as a reflection of the state’s acknowledgment of Guru Nanak’s teachings on equality and compassion.

President of the Sikh Community Connections, Gurinder Kaur, remarked, “This recognition strengthens our sense of belonging and renews our commitment to continue contributing to this beautiful country.”

The renaming of Guru Nanak Lake marks a significant milestone for both the Sikh community and Victoria, symbolizing a lasting bond of respect and recognition in Australia’s multicultural landscape.
