Two men have died after their home-built plane crashed near Shepparton airport in northern Victoria this afternoon.

The Lancair Legacy aircraft crashed close to the Goulburn Valley Highway shortly after take-off.

It burst into flames after coming down on the side of the highway.

There are reports the plane went through the airport fence.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating the cause of the accident.

The Goulburn Valley Highway is closed in both directions.

Local caravan park owner Shannon McDonald says emergency services are on the scene near the Goulburn Valley Highway.

“Two of our residents heard a loud bang,” he said.

“Basically all I can see is emergency vehicles, ambulance, fire, SES, all that type of thing parked across the highway in both directions.”
