Jammu – A Sikh youth identified as Jasjit Singh was killed in police firing during a protest over removal of a poster of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in Jammu on Thursday.
Jasjit Singh S/o Nirwair Singh belonged to RS pura area of Jammu and was in his early twenties only.
According to witnesses, the police in order to control the mob resorted to firing in Jagjit Singh was killed. Following the incident, the protesters resorted to massive stone-throwing prompting authorities to impose curfew in the areas falling under police Station Satwari and police post Gaedigarh.
Expressing full solidarity with Jammu Sikhs and offering condolence to the family members of deceased, party leaders Satnam Singh and Kanwar Pal Singh in a statement said the BJP has a complete hold on Jammu administration and “It was this party who nurtures hatred against Sikhs and Muslims”.
They alleged that BJP was playing dangerous game and in order to silence the voices of minorities they had given free hand to police and security forces. They said: “Removing of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale’s posters that led to the outrage was BJP’s design aimed to provoke Sikh youth. Jammu police has unleashed a reign of terror on protesting Sikhs and showed their barbaric face“. The police barbarism was repeat of what they have been doing with the valley Muslims since decades.
Meanwhile, Dal Khalsa has strongly condemned the killing of the youth, saying he was protesting against the detention of some youths by city police.
While strongly condemning the killing of innocent Jagjit Singh in Jammu, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani termed this police action as “worst kind of state terrorism.
After the incident the administration imposed curfew was imposed in Ranibagh area of Jammu.
According to sources, two more Sikhs had sustained injuries in this police firing.
