A violent incident at Bendigo Marketplace on Monday afternoon led to a temporary lockdown of the shopping centre. Around 4.pm, a group of nine teenagers, reportedly drinking alcohol and playing loud music, were asked to leave by a 20-year-old security guard due to their disruptive behaviour. In response, the teens allegedly attacked the guard, punching, kicking, and dragging him to the ground before stomping on his head. Bystanders who attempted to intervene were also assaulted.

Witnesses reported that the teenagers had been drinking on a bus before entering the marketplace. The violent altercation prompted employees and shoppers to seek shelter in stores, securing themselves behind locked doors. The assailants fled on foot before police arrived. The security guard received medical attention at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Acting Superintendent David Bowler described the incident as a “really horrific offence.” Police have identified the nine youths involved and have arrested four so far: a 17-year-old male, a 17-year-old female, a 15-year-old female, and a 14-year-old female. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities collaborating with local schools and community organizations to address the issue of youth crime in the area.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage within the community, with many expressing concerns over safety and the apparent rise in violent youth behaviour. Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the attack, stating she was “absolutely sickened by this disgusting attack,” and emphasized that such behaviour is “absolutely appalling.” She acknowledged the need for stronger bail laws and assured residents that the government is reviewing current legislation to enhance community safety.

Local law enforcement has increased patrols in the Bendigo Central Business District, focusing on curbing antisocial behaviour. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
