Violent clashes between SGPC and Sikhs at Akal Takhat Sahib

Amritsar, 6th June (SS News) – Atleast five persons were injured in a clash that took place between Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) task force members and Sikh Groups during observation of the 30th anniversary of Operation Bluestar at Akal Takht here on Friday morning.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of 1984 Shaheeds and Operation Blue star, Bhog of akhand path was recited at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Thousands of Sikhs all over Punjab and around gathered.

Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib Giani gurbachan singh was addressing the gathering.  Kins of those killed in army action were being bestowed upon siropa’s by jathedar. Khalistan slogans are being raised at Akal Takht. Handful of Sikh groups were demanding khalistan in presence of jathedar, SGPC and police officials. Many senior police officials in plain clothes were also present in golden temple.

As per initial reports, trouble started after members of the Shiromani Akali Dal-controlled Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) protested Shriomani Akali Dal (Amritsar) leader Simranjit Singh Mann’s attempt to give a speech from Rostrum of the Akal Takht.

One of Mann’s supporters tried to snatch the microphone from Jathedar of Akal Thakt, Giani Gurbachan Singh, in protest.

This infuriated members of SGPC-run Golden Temple Task Force and they swung into action to take on Mann’s supporters.

Soon it was a free for all, with both sides reacting violently with swords and kirpans. Atleast five people have sustained injuries reports claimed.

 There was much chaos at Akal Takht Sahib and a few sikhs were raising slogans against sgpc. Couple of Sikhs took out swords in parikarma. Fight between sikh groups broke out in golden temple complex and many devotees were running for safety.

Naked swords were being flashed  near Akal Takht. Large number of SGPC task force personals came to control the warring factions. Doors of Sri Akal Takht Sahib were closed too.

Senior police officials in plain clothes are trying to pacify the agitated sikhs. Senior police officer brar could be seen persuading the agitated Sikhs with folded hands. Standoff continues between warring factions in Darbar Sahibcomplex. Sikh youth brandishing naked swords and raising slogans of khalistan later left from Sri Akal Takht Sahib and were then in parikarma of Darbar Sahib.
