AMRITSAR – A 10-feet statue of freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh is inaugurated at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on March 13. The initiative is being undertaken by International Sarab Kamboj Sabha, an NGO, which had been demanding installation of the statue since four decades.
A 10-foot marble statue of Shaheed Udham Singh, in a portrait of taking pledge to avenge Jallianwala Bagh massacre, got installed on March 12 at the main entrance of the Bagh and inaugurated by Union home minister Rajnath Singh on March 13. He said the statue has been prepared in Rajasthan at a cost of Rs 10 lakh.
Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation president Sukhchain Singh Lyallpuri said they had been struggling to install the statue of the martyr at the bagh for the past nearly 15 years.
“Udham Singh had sacrificed his life to avenge the massacre of Indians at the Jallianwala Bagh. He had made this categorically clear in the court before he was awarded capital punishment and hanged in England in 1940,” Lyallpuri said.
