Haryana governor Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki took over the additional charge of Governor of Punjab. He will be 34th governor of Punjab.

He was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Shiavax Jal Vazifdar at Punjab Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

He was given the additional charge of Punjab after the tenure of then governor Shivraj V Patil  retired on 21 January 2015 after his tenure came to an end.

A hard-core RSS man, Solanki, 75, has been drafted by the BJP-led government at the Centre for dealing with the post-poll scenario in Haryana. The state is due for Assembly elections in a couple of months.

He will also hold charge of administrator of union territory of Chandigarh.

The five-year term of Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil ended Wednesday. Patil, a former union home minister, joined here as governor Jan 22, 2010.

Patil’s tenure remained largely non-controversial but lacklustre, especially in the context of Chandigarh’s development.
