Chandigarh: The central committee of the People’s Party of Punjab (PPP), took an unanimous decision today and dissolved its 22 district units.

On Sunday, PPP President Manpreet Badal announced that its alliance with the Congress would remain till the 2017 Assembly elections and decided not to field candidates for the byelections for the Patiala and Talwandi Sabo seats.

But the party will field its candidates for the municipal elections scheduled to be held later this year.

The committee decided to reconstitute the party’s organisational structure. Manpreet Badal said that the PPP-Congress alliance had performed fairly well during the recent Lok Sabha elections.

“We think the alliance will prove fruitful in the future too.

“We have decided to reconstitute the party as many members performed exceptionally well during the Lok Sabha elections and they deserve to be given greater responsibility.”

Manpreet said since the Patiala and Talwandi Sabo seats had been vacated by Congress leaders, the Congress must put up candidates for both the seats.

“We will support any candidate put up by the congress, unless the new PPP office-bearers decide to stake claim to one of the seats,” he said.

35 of the 45 members of the central committee attended the meeting today. Manpreet Badal was under criticism for running the party in an arbitrary manner and not consulting the other PPP leaders in important matters.

His decision to contest the Lok Sabha election in Bathinda had also been opposed.
