The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday installed portraits of June 1984 Shaheed Bhai Mehnga Singh Babbar and Kirtaniya Bhai Avtar Singh Parowal at the Central Sikh Museum of Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar complex.
SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal unveiled the portraits in a brief event at the museum. He also honoured the family members of Babbar and Parowal with ‘siropa’ (robe of honour).
Longowal said: “He was blessed to have breathed his last in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib. He sacrificed his life for the sake of maintaining the ‘rehat maryada’ of the Golden Temple.”
Longowal further said that the Sikhs have been continuously facing discrimination and excesses by the Indian government. “The attacks on Sikhs are continuous even after June-1984’s holocaust and November-1984’s genocide. The Sikh identity and Punjabi language are being targeted particularly,” he said while appealing to Sikhs to get united for tackling these attacks.
