Political Clash or Religious Decree? The Akal Takht’s Hukamnama on Bhagwant Mann

Must Read

A significant confrontation has emerged between the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, the Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Following a series of controversial events and legislative decisions, the Akal Takht has issued a formal decree (Hukamnama) that carries deep religious and political implications for the state of Punjab.

The Akal Takht’s Declaration: “Guru-dokhi” and “Panth-virodhi”

The Akal Takht, led by the Five Singh Sahibs, has officially declared Bhagwant Mann as “Guru-dokhi” (an enemy of the Guru) and “Panth-virodhi” (anti-Panth). This severe pronouncement stems from several key grievances:

  • The Alcohol Video Controversy: A viral video allegedly shows Mann performing “objectionable acts” and sprinkling alcohol on a portrait of the ten Gurus and an image of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The Akal Takht asserts that such actions are an intolerable insult to the Sikh faith.
  • Allegations of Lying to the Takht: During a meeting on January 15, 2026, Mann reportedly told the Singh Sahibs that the video was a fake produced by Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, the Akal Takht claims that after Mann failed to provide forensic labs for verification, they conducted their own independent investigation through two government-authorized labs. These labs reportedly confirmed the video was authentic and untampered with.
  • Legislative Disregard: The Akal Takht criticized the Mann government for passing the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar Act without consulting Panthic organizations or the SGPC. They argue the government acted with “arrogance” by ignoring religious authority in favor of state legislation.

Bhagwant Mann’s Defense: “It Is Not Me”

In a live address, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann vehemently denied the allegations, characterizing them as a politically motivated conspiracy. His rebuttal focuses on several points:
  • Denial of Identity: Mann explicitly stated that he is not the individual in the viral video, arguing that the physical stature and body structure of the person shown do not match his own.
  • Critique of “Political Bosses”: While maintaining his deep respect for the institution of the Akal Takht, Mann criticized the “political appointments” within religious management. He alleged that these leaders are acting at the behest of “political bosses” to spread “false propaganda” and malign his reputation.
  • Conflict Over Sacrilege Laws: Mann defended his government’s laws against sacrilege (Beadbi), stating they were created to protect the honor of the Guru’s Bani. He accused religious administrators of inconsistency, noting they previously demanded such laws but now reject them because they were not the ones to enact them.
  • Double Standards: The CM highlighted what he sees as flip-flopping by the religious leadership, pointing out how they have pardoned or failed to act against individuals who openly confessed to sacrilege and firing incidents in the past.

The Appeal to the Sangat

The Akal Takht has called upon the global Sikh community (Nanak Leva Sangat) to socially boycott the Chief Minister,. Conversely, Bhagwant Mann has appealed to the same community to not fall for “ugly tricks” and propaganda, asserting that his heart beats for Punjab and he will continue to take decisions in the interest of its people.
As this unprecedented rift between the state government and the highest religious authority of the Sikhs continues to widen, the ultimate resolution, as Mann suggests, may lie with the Sangat (the people)
