Police said two people were treated for minor injuries after the 5pm incident.
Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Taylor of Counties Manukau CIB said, just after 2.30pm on Monday, a man had approached officers at the scene and was taken into custody.
“We have charged the man with two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of threats to kill.”
Initially, police said the assault took place at Takanini Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib on Takanini School Rd but this was updated with a clarification a few hours later.
“While the incident took place on the grounds itself, it occurred at a sports complex located next to the Takanini Sikh Temple, not in the temple itself,” a police update said.
Taylor earlier said an offender had approached a man known to him.
“He has begun to assault the man, before bystanders have intervened to stop the offending.”
Police said a second victim suffered minor injuries after intervening.
Taylor reiterated after the arrest that the incident was not considered a hate-motivated crime and was the result of a dispute between two parties known to each other.
“Both victims have since received treatment at a local medical centre and fortunately no one was seriously injured as a result.”
Police added reassurance patrols were carried out around the area as a result of the incident.
