The court premises here witnessed a ruckus on Thursday when Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann, along with his supporters, tried to meet Jagtar Singh Tara, an assassin of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, in the court complex.
Initially, police personnel denied him permission to enter the court, but Mann showed resistance. Later, Only Mann, his party secretary-general Jaskaran Singh Kahansinghwala and a few others were allowed inside the court to meet Tara in the court room for a few minutes.
When Tara was taken back from the court, Mann’s supporters tried to break the police security ring, but the security staff pushed them back. Both Mann and Jaskaran were roughed up by the cops. His supporters also raised slogans against the state government and the Punjab Police..
Mann said Tara told him that there was a threat to his life as the police might take him away and target him in a fake encounter.
“The government must ensure his security not only while bringing him to the court but also in the jail,” he added.
Remand extended
The court on Thursday extended Tara’s police remand for three more days. Earlier, the police had procured his five-day police remand. He was produced under heavy security as police personnel cordoned off the court premises.
Arrested in Thailand on January 6, Tara was brought to India on January 16.
The Patiala police had sought further remand of nine days, stating that they wanted to obtain more information about his plans for possible terror attacks, besides making some recovery from Nepal.
But the court extended the remand by only three days.
