Patiala police arrests auto driver who attacked varsity girl, plays soft on accused

PATIALA: The role of Patiala police came under scanner after the arrest of accused auto rickshaw driver who was on October 12 morning attacked and seriously wounded a girl student of Punjabi University here. The police showing a soft corner has not registered the case for attempt to murder against the accused.

The accused identified as Swaran Singh resident of Shekhupura near university has been booked under sections 364 and 394 of IPC for causing injury and kidnaping. The girl was attacked with a screw driver and it has punchered one of her lungs. The victim is fighting for life in the hospital. The police swung into action only after student unions of university gave an ultimatum for the arrest of accused auto rickshaw driver.

Hardayal Singh SSP Patiala however said that police was committed for the security of girls and patrolling of area around university and other education institutions would be intensified. He said that victim girl had taken auto rickshaw to go to Bus Stand as she was going to Faridkot to attend a marriage. He said that Auto Rickshaw driver had taken her to secluded palce and snatched her purse mobile and cash. He said that he attacked the girl when she resisted. He said that belongings of girl had been recovered. The accused was identified on the basis of a sketch as described by the girl.
