No direct endorsement to Nanak Shah Fakir movie, says Akal Takht Jathedar

Amritsar – While talking to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said that Akal Takht Sahib has not granted any direct recognition or endorsement to Harinder Sikka’s upcoming movie “Nanak Shah Fakir”.

“I do not know much about the moive, nor the Akal Takht Sahib has directly supported or endorsed it”, said Giani Gurbachan Singh. When it was pointed that Nanak Shah Fakir’s promotional ads are giving an impression that the moive is backed by the Akal Takht Sahib, Gaini Gurbachan Singh said that a resolution by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) clearly bars depiction of Sikh Gurus. No actor can play as Sikh Gurus, however animation or portrait may be used for limited purposes, said Giani Gurbachan Singh.

Though the movie is not released yet but a teaser recently released on YouTube shows that “Nanak Shah Fakir” depicts Guru Nanak Ji. The trailer began with a message thanking the Akal Takht Sahib for their support and blessings giving an impression that the movie is endorsed by the Akal Takht Sahib.

Talking to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone, Giani Gurbachan Singh said that many people have already raised the issue “Nanak Shah Fakir” with him. “Many have called me raise their concerns about the Moive”, he said while adding that Harinder Sikka, producer of Nanak Shah Fakir, has assured him that no actor has played the role of Sikh Guru Sahib in his moive.

On being asked that was is proper to depict Sikh Gurus in animation mode, he said “Chaar Sahibzaade movie was widely appreciated by the Sikh sangat”. He, however, evaded any direct answer to the question that if it was proper to depict Sikh Gurus in animation?

A Sikh youth body named Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) has announced to oppose upcoming movie “Nanak Shah Fakir”. The movie is said to depict the life of first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Ji, through the eyes of Guru Ji’s companion Bhai Mardana.

Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP), youth wing of Dal Khalsa, has announced to oppose the movie, while maintaining that this movie offends the Sikh tradition. “Nanak Shah Fakir movie is an attempt to harm Sikh principles” SYF said in a release. “Sakhi and not the Jhaki is the Sikh tradition”, it added.
