As Narendra Modi’s cabinet of ministers readies to be sworn in this evening, reports indicated that India is likely to see a drastic change in the formation of top ministries. And Modi is not likely to be a ‘Dillwalla’ like Vajpayee when it comes to handing out ministries, says a report in The Times of India.
According to one report in TOI, “Modi is expected to cluster ministries, putting them under one minister to improve synergies and ensure that related departments come under one roof.” The report also says that this is in keeping with Modi’s oft-quoted ‘minimum government, maximum governance’ line. An Indian Express report notes that a statement from Gujarat Bhavan said the focus would be on “convergence in the activities of various ministries where one Cabinet minister will be heading a cluster of ministries working in complementary sectors”. Modi is looking for “smart governance where the top layers of government will be downsized and there would be expansion at the grass-root level,” says the statement.
