Phagwara, July 3, 2014 – A Pall of Gloom descended in village Mahal, the native village of the deceased under trial Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi who died in mysterious circumstances in sub jail Phagwara on July 3.

A Hue and Cry among the relatives and family members was witnessed when the dead body of the deceased was brought to the village where hundreds of the villagers attended his funeral in village crematorium late Friday evening.

Judicial Magistrate Phagwara Hon. Rupinder Singh who recorded the statements of Balwinder Kaur and Baljit Kaur mother and sister respectively of the deceased has said that he will visit Phagwara Sub Jail to assess the situation, will record statements of all concerned and examine the report of autopsy conducted in local civil hospital today.

He said he will submit his detailed report within one week to District & Session Judge Kapurthala to reach out to a conclusion.

Case background:

Gurpreet Singh Gopi was arrested by CIA wing of Phagwara on July 21 and he was lodged in Phagwara sub-jail. Police had claimed that he was arrested with 6gm heroin from village Narangshahpur. However, the protesters on Friday claimed that he was picked up from his Mahlan village, near Goraya, and was implicated in the drug case. However, CIA wing officials claimed that he was a drug peddler.

He was booked under NDPS Act, was shifted to the hospital on Thursday night after his condition worsened at Phagwara sub jail.
