The Jalandhar police on Sunday booked Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, for his alleged controversial remarks against freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
The case was registered against Tushar Gandhi under Section 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class) of the IPC after a complaint by the chairman of an NGO, Jan Jagriti Manch, Kishan Lal Sharma.
It was alleged that Tushar Gandhi, while speaking to the media in Jaipur earlier, had said that “Mahatma Gandhi did not intervene in Bhagat Singh’s death sentence as the freedom fighter was a criminal for the British rulers”.
Members of Jan Jagriti Manch, which has been organising programmes on Shaheed Bhagat Singh for the past 20 years, and other organisations affiliated to Bhagat Singh met the Jalandhar Police Commissioner on Saturday with a complaint against Tushar Gandhi.
“We met the police commissioner and appealed to book Gandhi for making such a statement against Bhagat Singh,” Sharma said.
Kishan Lal Sharma said they have also demanded that Tushar Gandhi be arrested immediately.
SHO, Police Division 8, Vimal Kant said an FIR has been registered against Tushar Gandhi and further investigation in the the case was on.
After the registration of the case, activists of the manch burnt an effigy of Tushar at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk in the evening and demanded his immediate arrest.
