Melbourne – In a historic announcement on Saturday, Oct 25, Daniel Andrews, Leader of Labor Party made a commitment to the Indian Community on the eve of Diwali celebrations at Federation Square that Andrews Labor Government will build an Indian Community Cultural Precinct in Melbourne.
This will be the first such precnit in Australia for the Indian Community recognizing great contribution that Indian community have made to Victoria ad Australia. This will be a landmark development in the history of Indian migration to Australia.
Melbourne is home to the highest concentration of Indians in Australia with nearly 50% Australian-Indians based in melbourne. Daniel Andrews also said that Indian community and its culture have made Victoria a better place for which every Australian and Labor party is thankful to them.
The precinct will add another page to Melbourne’s reputation as the multicultural capital of Australia.
The location of the precinct will be determined after a full consultation and master planning process is undertaken in the first term of government.
“The Greek community celebrates in Lonsdale Street, there is Chinatown on Little Bourke, Lygon Street is richly Italian and the Vietnamese have Little Saigon in Footscray – Melbourne will now have an Indian cultural precinct as well.”
“This will be a place to hold festivals, a hub to support businesses, a drawcard to attract tourists – it will be a meeting place for the entire community.”
Labor will undertake a process to find the most appropriate location and what the precinct will comprise of in consultation with the community.
