India has formally joined the list of more than 120 nations, such as the United States, Canada, France, Japan, and Australia, in issuing biometric e-passports to its citizens, with the introduction of chip-based e-passports, aiming to enhance security and streamline international travel.
Key Features of the Chip-Based E-Passport
- Enhanced Security: The digitally signed chip makes it incredibly difficult to duplicate, forge, or tamper with your passport, offering superior protection against identity theft.
- Faster Immigration: Immigration officials can quickly authenticate your passport using the chip, significantly speeding up identity checks and reducing wait times at border crossings.
- Future-Ready Travel: E-passports pave the way for the use of automated e-gates at airports, promising even quicker, contactless clearance in the future.
- Global Standard Compliance: India’s e-passports adhere to international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), ensuring global recognition and smoother travel worldwide.
Implementation Timeline and Current Status
The pilot project for e-passports commenced on April 1, 2024, alongside the rollout of the Passport Seva Program (PSP) Version 2.0. Currently, e-passports are being issued at Regional Passport Offices (RPOs) in cities including Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, and Ranchi. The Ministry of External Affairs plans to expand issuance to more RPOs across the country in a phased manner.
Security and Privacy Measures
To safeguard personal data, the e-passport employs advanced encryption techniques. The RFID chip is designed to prevent unauthorized access, ensuring that sensitive information remains protected. These measures align with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Impact on Immigration and Border Control
The introduction of e-passports is expected to facilitate automated identity verification processes, thereby expediting immigration procedures. This advancement aims to enhance the overall travel experience for Indian citizens by reducing wait times and improving the accuracy and security of border control operations.
Where Can You Get Yours?
The rollout is happening in phases. Currently, e-passports are being issued in Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi, and Delhi. Chennai has been a frontrunner, issuing e-passports since March 2025. The government aims to extend this service to all Passport Seva Kendras across India by mid-2025.
What About Your Existing Passport?
No need to worry! Your current traditional passport will remain valid until its expiration date. The e-passport is an optional upgrade for when you apply for a new passport or renewal.
