CHENNAI: A woman, who was said to be upset after her husband failed to buy clothes for her and children for Diwali, jumped into the Chembarambakkam lake along with her two daughters on Monday. Passersby saved the woman and one of the children, while the other one died.
Police said Deepa, 24, was married to Ramesh, 30, a lorry driver. The couple, hailing from Poonamallee, had two children – Swetha, 4, and Lathika, 2.
Ramesh allegedly squandered his earnings on drinking and never supported the family. On Saturday, he promised to buy clothes for them but failed to do so. The couple had a fight on Sunday night over the issue.
They fought again on Monday morning, and Ramesh allegedly used force to calm her down. Unable to bear the harassment, Deepa left the home with the children and jumped into the lake. Office goers, who saw her falling into the lake with her daughters, jumped into it to save them. They managed to save Deepa and Lathika, while Swetha died before they brought her to the bank of the lake.
Deepa and Lathika where rushed to a private hospital.
The Poonamallee police moved Swetha’s dead body to the Chengelpet Government Hospital for postmortem.
