Harjinder Singh Dhami re-elected SGPC president

Amritsar – Harjinder Singh Dhami was on Wednesday re-elected president of the SGPC. Out of the 146 votes polled by SGPC members, Dhami got 104 while Bibi Jagir Kaur, who was on Monday expelled by the SAD after she refused to back down from her decision of contesting the poll, secured 42 votes in a keenly watched contest.

Baldev Singh Kaimpuri was unanimously elected senior vice president as no one contested against him.

Avtar Singh Fatehgarh was unanimously elected junior vice president. Gurcharan Singh Garewal was unanimously elected general secretary.

Out of 157 members, 146 had turned up to participate in the election process of SGPC, the Mini Parliament of Sikhs -at Teja Singh Samundri Hall in Golden Temple complex today.

In the 11-member executive body, three members from Opposition party will be inducted. This implies that these three members would participate in every decision and move taken by the SGPC.

After the results were declared, Kaur dared Sukhbir Singh Badal to resign from the post of Akali Dal president.

“Akali Dal leaders had claimed that they would resign if I secured more than 25 votes. I secured 42. Now Sukhbir Badal should resign. I have come out of the SGPC House by calling out the traitors of the Khalsa panth. Such traitors of panth will be ousted,” Jagir Kaur said.

Jagir Kaur, a three-time SGPC chief further termed the the poll result as “my victory”. “I have taught them how to contest election. Sukhbir Badal had to camp here to defeat me. They even threatened SGPC members and warned them against voting for me”.
