Former Haryana Chief Minister, OP Chautala back in Tihar jail

NEW DELHI: Former Haryana chief minister and INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala on Saturday surrendered at Tihar jail after
Delhi high court on Friday cancelled his interim bail and ordered him to discontinue his political rallies.

HC asks Chautala to surrender

Chautala was convicted in January last year for running a graft-laden JBT teachers recruitment scheme to recruit teachers for government institutions when he was in office in 1999. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail and had on September 26 volunteered to surrender after which the court had fixed October 17 as the date for his surrender. But the court on Friday advanced that date and gave him 24 hours to surrender after he was found campaigning for his party.

This after CBI had moved the court alleging that Chautala had flouted his bail conditions.

CBI in its plea had said that Chautala was busy campaigning for his party for the Haryana assembly elections despite being out on bail on medical grounds.

Chautala arrived at the jail around 8:45 pm in a white SUV accompanied by a number of supporters. He was sent to jail number 2 where he was lodged earlier. A top Tihar official said 7 pm is the “lock out time” and since Mr Chautala came over an hour after the deadline ended, the matter would be reported to the court.
