Giani Jaswinder Singh, granthi at Sri Harmandir Sahib, has resigned from his post in the aftermath of a recent incident in which he failed to report on morning duty.
SGPC additional secretary Daljit Singh Bedi said the SGPC executive committee had accepted the resignation. Though the SGPC is claiming that Giani Jaswinder Singh has resigned due to health reasons, sources said he was forced to quit after he was “found absent from his duty” on the morning of April 5, when Palki Sahib carrying Guru Granth Sahib ji was to be taken from Akal Takht Sahib to the Golden Temple causing delays by around 15 minutes.
The duty was then performed by another Granthi Singh of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The incident was strongly condemned by the Sikh Sangat, following which the executive committee took the decision regarding his resignation, said sources.
Earlier, Giani Jaswinder Singh was demoted from ‘head granthi’ to granthi after he skipped some portions of the ‘rehras’ (evening prayer), while reciting the prayer at the sanctum sanctorum,” they added.
