Essendon Man charged over alleged taxi driver assault

A 21 years old man has been charged after a taxi driver was punched and allegedly had his turban ripped off before being pushed over a fence, police say.

Police said a taxi driver was allegedly attacked after driving a couple, both aged in their 20s, from South Melbourne to Essendon around 11.30pm.

Police said an argument broke out between the passengers over who would pay the fare, and they walked from the taxi without paying. The taxi driver then called out to them, asking that they pay.

The male passenger then allegedly attacked the driver, punching him repeatedly, ripping his turban from his head and pulling his heard.

The offender allegedly threw the driver head first over a nearby fence, kneed him in the shoulder before stealing cash from the driver’s shirt pocket.

The taxi driver suffered a dislocated shoulder, swelling and bruising from the attack and was treated by paramedics.

The 21-year-old Essendon man was arrested this morning and charged with robbery, theft, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury and assault. He was bailed to appear in Broadmeadow’s Magistrate’s Court on 2 February 2015.
