DELHI – Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK on Tuesday said he had only handed over the charge to senior vice president Harmeet Singh Kalka and not quit his post.

Parminderpal Singh, Media advisor to GK, has confirmed the development. The charge of president of DSGMC has been handed over to senior vice-president Harmeet Singh Kalka.

“I have not quit my post. It is just that I will be busy in personal matter over  the next two weeks,”  GK told media on Tuesday morning denying reports in a section of the Punjab media that indicated that he had quit the post.

Nonetheless, GK has not resigned from the party. His media advisor told that GK was upset with the Akali  Dal leadership. He was not happy with the party’s handling of the sensitive issue of sacrilege of Sikh holy texts in Punjab.

When asked if he had an issue with the party, GK said he was a loyal soldier of the SAD and that the party needed to work on the issue of resignation of senior leaders as it could harm it.

Senior leader SS Dhindsa quit the party last week. Sources said GK had not been attending the office for the past four days.

GK’s resignation has come as a big blow to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Gk himself had faced the ire of the Sikhs recently in the US. He was physically assaulted by some individuals in New York and later in California.

The DSGMC is an elected body that controls Sikh affairs in the national capital, including gurdwaras Sisganj Sahib, Bangla Sahib, Rakab Ganj Sahib and Bala Sahib.

Harvinder Singh Sarna, general secretary of the SAD (Delhi), Independent DSGMC member Harmit Singh Shanty and Panthak Seva Dal member Inderjit Singh Monty, in separate statements, claimed that GK had staged his “resignation drama” to divert attention from allegations of corruption against him.

They said GK had withdrawn Rs 51 lakh from the DSGMC account by making false entries. “The money had come from a donor abroad.” They also alleged GK had produced bills for printing schoolbooks, which were never printed. The address on the printers’ receipt was fake too.

Shanty and Sarna claimed GK had no loyalty for the Panth “or else he would have resigned from the SAD when clemency was awarded to Dera Sacha Sauda chief.” The DSGMC chief rubbished the charges.
