In a major embarrassment for the Chandigarh Police, two constables, including a woman cop, were allegedly thrashed by eight youths over an altercation on Tuesday.
After receiving a complaint of snatching, the two officials visited the spot at Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, without adequate police force to confront eight youths.
Around 7.30 pm on Tuesday, the Mauli Jagran police post received a call about an incident of snatching at Vikas Nagar. The officials at the police post were told well in advance (in the complaint) that the miscreants were at least four in number. Even then, the police did not bother to send adequate force there.
Upon reaching the spot, the two constables — Suresh and Anita — searched for the complainant. They, however, noticed eight youths sitting in the area. Upon confrontation, the officials found the youths to be allegedly drunk. After further questioning, an altercation happened between the youths and the police. In order to identify the miscreants, the woman constable started clicking photographs with an official camera.
When the miscreants noticed themselves being clicked, one of them snatched the camera from Anita along with her gold chain. The youths then hit both the police officials with stones. They suffered head injuries and were taken to a civil hospital in Mani Majra. Later, all the eight youths fled.
