AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Following 25 years long imprisonment, political Sikh prisoner Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera has been released on parole for 28 days. Bhai Khaira was released from the Central Jail of Amritsar on April 22 at 5:30 pm. It is notable that Bhai Khaira was transferred from Karnataka jail to Amritsar jail last year in May month under pressure of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s hunger protest.
Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera visited Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar upon his release. He was accompanied by Bhai Mohkam Singh of United Akali Dal and other Sikh activists. Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera also visited Sri Akal Takht Sahib where he did ardas to Guru Hargobind Sahib appreciating efforts by Panthik Jathebandis and Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa for his parole.
Bhai Mohkam Singh also appreciated efforts by Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa while he welcomed Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khaira. He said that the parole would pave path for Bhai Khera’s permanent release.
Bhai Kanwarpal Singh of Dal Khalsa also welcomed the release and stated that this became possible with efforts of the Panth, and the Punjab Government had no role to play in Bhai Khera’s release.
Sikh Council UK also welcomed the release and appreciated efforts by Sikh Organization for Prisoner Welfare, another organization based out of the UK. “Excellent work by SOPW sewadars in achieving the release on parole of Gurdeep Singh Khera after 26 years,” the Sikh Council UK posted online. SOPW has been providing assistance to Bhai Khera since his imprisonment in Karnataka.
