Brampton City Council unanimously passed a motion moved by Regional Councillor Gurpreet Singh Dhillon and City Councillor Harkirat Singh at their meeting on October 23, 2019, to rename a street in honor of the anniversary of the Sikh religion’s founder, Guru Nanak.
The street, formerly known as the section of Peter Robertson Blvd between Dixie Road and Great Lakes Road, will be renamed to ‘Guru Nanak Street’ or ‘Guru Nanak Road’.
The city’s public works and engineering staff have been directed to take on the renaming of the street in time for ‘Gurpurab,” Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary, which will be celebrated worldwide by both Sikhs and non-Sikhs.
The Guru Nanak Mission Centre Gurdwara, the only municipal address of the stretch of road that will be renamed, endorsed this change while expressing their appreciation on behalf of the congregation and almost 200,000 Brampton residents of Sikh faith.
“Brampton is home to one of the largest Sikh populations in the world, and have contributed greatly to the social, economic, political, and cultural fabric of our great city. Guru Nanak’s teachings of oneness of humanity, gender equality, and care of the less fortunate align with Brampton’s values,” said Councillor Dhillon.
“I am proud our Council has moved to celebrate its vast cultural diversity, which includes people from all different religions, backgrounds, and ethnicities,” he added.
The city will announce the date of the official renaming ceremony after the change is approved through the normal processes at the Region of Peel.
