The relationship between the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJP might touch a new low as PM Narendra Modihas cancelled his promised visit to Sri Anandpur Sahib, scheduled for June 19. The Punjab government was told that Modi will be hosting the President of United Republic of Tanzania on the same day, The Indian Express reported.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh has, however, confirmed his visit to attend a function to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the holy city.
The cancellation is being seen as the last straw that broke the camel’s back as far as the SAD-BJP alliance is concerned. BJP leaders said they had sent a survey report to the PM stating it was not safe for him to visit Punjab.
Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, Education Minister and SAD spokesperson, said, “We have not got any confirmation from the PM yet. We have learnt that Tanzanian President is visiting New Delhi that day. Hence, the PM has to host him.” He said if Modi can’t come, Rajnath would be the chief guest. “PM is a busy man. Let us see,” he added.
