Jammu: Cricketer and former BJP MP, Navjot Singh Sidhu’s, cavalcade was on Thursday attacked with bricks, stones and other projects by unidentified assailants as he was campaigning for the party at Bhor camp on the outskirts of the city. BJP blamed the incident on Congress party.
Police and witnessed said that Sidhu’s car and other vehicles were targeted as they drove in the area during while on campaigning trail to seek voters’ support for BJP’s candidate from Gandhi Nagar Assembly segment, Kavinder Gupta. Though Sidhu escaped unhurt, his driver Parveen Singh injured in the attack and was hospitalised, police said.
Police officials here believe that the attack could be a result of sections of people being annoyed with Sidhu over his recent remark being seen by them as wrong interpretation of a portion of their religious scripture.
Reports said that the police has detained two persons in this case. Police said that Sidhu’s vehicle was badly damaged.
Confirming the incident, BJP spokesperson and ‘war room’ in-charge Arun Gupta said that it was a murderous assault on Sidhu in which he narrowly escaped. He blamed the incident on the Congress party saying, “It is Congress’s and its MLA’s frustration due to the growing popularity of BJP not only in this constituency, but elsewhere in the state too.”
Earlier also Sidhu was attacked in similar fashion after he had addressed a BJP rally in Gandhi Nagar’s Digiana area. Congress minister Raman Bhalla is re-seeking election from Gandhi Nagar.
