A couple of weeks ago, we reported that the much loved and respected Bhai Pal Singh (France), was undergoing hospital treatment for skin cancer as a result of the severe torture inflicted upon him at the time of his arrest in 2010.
The current situation is that Bhai Pal Singh has not yet been discharged from hospital and is recovering from his operation. Whilst SOPW is awaiting further test results on Bhai Sahib’s state of health, one of the cases against him is reaching a critical stage.
Back in December 2012 a High Court order was issued to the Sessions Court Judge that Pal Singh’s case should be wrapped up within the strict time frame of 3 months. However, as is often the case in the Indian legal system, this did not happen and an extension of 3 months was requested by the concerning judge.
As it stands today, the judge has been granted 3 extensions of 3 months each – a total of 9 months in all, but the case has still not reached its conclusion. Last month the Sessions Court Judge again applied for a 3 month extension but the High Court has ordered that the case be concluded by 30 September 2013 at the latest.
Under normal circumstances, the accused must appear in court, but due to Pal Singh’s hospitalisation, the lawyers on both sides have signed an agreement that the case can continue in his absence.
In the unlikely event of a favorable result to this case, it is worth bearing in mind that there are actually 4 other cases pending against Bhai Pal Singh – 2 in Amritsar, 1 in Hoshiarpur and 1 in Ropar. The road ahead is very long, but with the Sangat’s support and Waheguru’s blessing, SOPW will continue to vigorously defend Bhai Pal Singh’s innocence in all these cases.
