Sangrur – Effigies of Badals and SGPC chief Makkar went up in flames, marking the triumph of good over evil, as mark of protest by Sikhs in Sangrur on Thursday.
Following recent incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib Punjab, members of various Sikh organisations on Thursday burnt the effigy of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema, MLA Jagir Kaur and Takht jathedars among others.
It was a new form of protest against the Badal government. The angry upsurge continues but the mode is changing.
SAD (A) state general secretary Gurnaib Singh Rampura said that the Badal government had no right to remain in power.
He further added, “The Sikhs wanted to get rid of the anti-Panth people. This is the reason why on the occasion of Dasehra today, we have burnt the effigy of political and religious leaders who have been playing an anti-Sikh role by taking wrong decisions, including pardon to Dera Sacha Sauda head.”
“People who have confessed to have torn the pages of Guru Granth Sahib are doing so under political pressure. It will be a long haul before calm is restored and the community wants stern action against the culprits,” he said. SAD (A) has also been receiving the support of several student bodies of district.
