BATHINDA/FARIDKOT: Bathinda police on Saturday claimed through an email that Baba Baljit Singh Daduwal, who is in judicial custody in Faridkot in connection with a rioting case of 2009, has sent a handwritten note that he had resigned from the ad hoc Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC). On the other hand, his wife Sukhmeet Kaur termed the police claims as baseless, saying the note could be a fake circulated allegedly to defame Daduwal.

Police said Daduwal had claimed in the note that he was resigning from HSGMC following the announcement by its president Jagdish Singh Jhinda that some of the committee members could contest the Haryana assembly elections on Congress party tickets.

When contacted, Daduwal’s wife Sukhmeet said she was with her husband in Mansa when he was being handed over to the Faridkot police on Saturday, but he did not disclose any plans to quit HSGMC. She said, “I have no knowledge of any such note written by him. The note could be a fake to defame my husband.”

Meanwhile, HSGMC vice-president Didar Singh Nalwi also denied knowledge of any such note from Daduwal. He said, “Daduwal is a balanced and wise person. It shows both SAD and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) are desperate to corner Daduwal as he got nominated to HSGMC and are settling scores through police.”

Mansa senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh Khattra said, “Police have recovered the AK-47 that was linked to the case against Baljit Singh Daduwal and 10 cartridges. Police also recovered an SUV bearing registration number PB-03-AD 0005 abandoned on the Barnala-Mansa road. A cheque book was recovered from the car. When investigated, it was found that transactions worth Rs 4.13 crore were made in three bank accounts of Daduwal in the last two years. Police are probing the sources of transactions.” SSP Khattra said police were seeking assistance from Income Tax (I-T) authorities as Daduwal had a PAN card but was not paying any tax.
