Akal Takht Jathedar Urges Sikhs to Mark 40 Years of 1984 Sikh Genocide Solemnly with Ghee Lamps on Bandi Chhod Divas
Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s Jathedar, Giani Raghbir Singh, has issued a directive to the Sikh community to mark Bandi Chhod Divas on November 1 in a solemn manner, in view of the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh Genocide. The Jathedar instructed that only ghee lamps should be lit in homes and Gurdwaras, and electrical decorations should be avoided.
Giani Raghbir Singh clarified that electrical decorations will only be permitted at Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He called on the global Sikh Sangat to celebrate Bandi Chhod Divas in the memory of the Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, by lighting ghee lamps rather than using electric lights or decorations.
In a written statement, the Jathedar reflected on the tragic events of November 1, 1984, when Sikhs across 110 cities in India, including Delhi, were subjected to mass killings under the Congress government’s watch. He emphasized that these events constituted a genocide and remain a deeply rooted wound in the Sikh psyche, with their memory resonating even after four decades.
The Jathedar acknowledged the struggles and resilience of the Sikh community in rebuilding their narrative and identity following the genocide. He described the Sikhs’ efforts over the past 40 years as “incredible and unprecedented.”
He further highlighted that November 1 is not only a somber day of remembrance for the 1984 genocide but also Bandi Chhod Divas, which commemorates Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s release from Gwalior Fort and his return to Sri Amritsar Sahib.
This directive aims to honor the dual significance of the day with reflection, remembrance, and simplicity, ensuring the memory of these events is preserved across generations.
