New Delhi: After its crushing defeat in Lok Sabha polls, the Congress leadership has indicated that it is ready to re-extend support to Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to form government in Delhi, reports said on Sunday.
The indication from the Congress came a day after around 20 AAP MLAs discussed the possibility of forming a government in Delhi with the support of Congress.
However, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely reportedly denied extending support and said that the party has sent no such proposal to AAP.
During the party’s internal meeting, several AAP MLAs blamed party chief Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation earlier this year as a major reason behind the poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls.
The internal meeting was reportedly attended by Kejriwal, party MLAs and Lok Sabha candidates.
The performance of AAP in the recent Lok Sabha polls was severely disappointing. The party had fielded 434 candidates across the nation but could win only four seats in Punjab.
Despite BJP’s clean sweep on all seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital, the party was on the second position while Congress was pushed to third.
AAP had made a smashing debut in the Assembly elections last year by winning 28 out of the total 70. It fell short of majority but later formed the government taking the outside support of Congress, which had won eight seats.
However, the tenure of the Kejriwal government was short-lived and it resigned 49 days later over its failure to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill in Delhi Assembly.
