1st Annual Gurmat & Sports Event held successfully at Khalsa Shaouni Plumpton

The first Gurmat and Sports event was held very successfully on 3rd May at Khalsa Shaouni Plumpton. The event went so successfully that the organisers said that it will become an annual event in future.

A large crowd of over 1000 visitors from all over Victoria attended this event. There was something for the kids and something for the adults.

The main objective of the event was to encourage Sikh children and community to meet in a family friendly environment to compete and participate in sports & cultural activities and provide opportunities for our communities to meet & enjoy games, sports, have fun, experience Sikhi spirit and chardi kala.

The event which was commemorated in the memory of Baba Daya Singh ji Sur Singh wale, started with the blessings of Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj with Morning Kirtan Katha Diwaan followed by Ardaas by Giani Avtar Singh ji.

Sports included Kabbadi, Gatka, tug-of-war, races, women chaati-race, musical chairs and other elementary games.

There was lot of free vegetarian food for the spectators who enjoyed bread Pakoras, chaat, gol-gappe, jalebiyan along with tea. A free kids train & jumping castle was also arranged to keep the kids entertained.

The event was successful with the generous donation by event sponsors. The first prize of $3100 for Kabaddi tournament was sponsored by Australian Education Academy, while the second prize of $2100 was given away by Bajwa Immigration Services. The third prize for an amount of $1100 for kabaddi was sponsored by Pankaj Sharma.

Members of the Sikh Motorcycle Club Australia all took part in this event. Infact they were one of the main attraction of the event with colorful turbans and Royal bikes decorating the event.

Damdami Taksal Ranjit Gatka Akhara also attracted the audience with the martial arts displayed via Gatka. They were presented a prize of $1100 sponsored by Raine and Horne Real Estate, Werribee.

Young and Senior Men participated in the Tug-of-war game and the winner team was awarded a prize of $700 while the second one received a prize of $400, both sponsored by Surinder Singh, Sandeep Singh Ghotra and Kamaljit Singh.

A striking attraction of the event was the Chatti-Race where women put traditional Chatti over the head and race without holding it with their hands.

Dastar competition winners were awarded $150 each for Turban and Dumalla both sponsored by Singh Tiles.

Victorian State Member for St. Albans, Natalie Suleyman and Marlene Kairouz graced the occasion, and were also a special guest.

It was a very Successful Cultural and Sports and Social Event where all Young and Old Ladies and Men have all day of Fun and activities.
