Pune:Â While the actor Sanjay Dutt celebrated his birthday on July 29, another convict of 1993 Mumbai blasts, Yakub Memon awaits death.
Sanjay Dutt turned 56 on Wednesday, July 29. The Bollywood actor celebrated his birthday in Yerwada Jail in Pune. While his fellow inmates arranged for a special party, his wife Manyata arranged for a surprise visit to the jail. According to reports, Manyata went to Pune to meet Sanjay Dutt. As family members can meet jail inmates once in a month, Manyata decided to meet her husband on his birthday.
Media reports quoted sources as saying that Manyata carried birthday messages from their children, Iqra and Shahraan, as well as greetings from other family members and friends. Dutt is expected to be released from jail by the end of 2015. He served 42-month jail as he was convicted for possessing illegal firearms that was part of a cache of weapons meant to be used during the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.
The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday rejected his mercy petition. Governor of Maharashtra too rejected his plea. Hence, sources claimed that Yakub Memon is likely to be hanged on Thursday, July 30, which ironically, is his birthday.
Yakub Memon, brother of one of the main conspirators of 1993 blasts, is the sole death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. 12 coordinated blasts had rocked Mumbai on March 12, 1993, leaving 257 dead and over 700 injured.
