JALANDHAR: The assault case of dalit girl Harbinder Kaur by TaranTaran police in March this year took a new turn on Sunday with her cousin Jagjit Singh, who had filmed the brazen attack, allegedly asking her to review the issue so that suspended sub-inspector Gurmit Singh could be reinstated.
Talking to media persons in the office of Punjab Mahila Congress vice-president Nimsha Mehta here on Sunday, Harbinder alleged that Jagjit had handed a letter to her father, asking them not to harm Gurmit Singh. The sub-inspector was suspended after Jagjit and Harbinder had alleged before media on June 25 that he had forced Jagjit, the main witness in the assault case, to record a false statement with inquiry officer and Jalandhar divisional commissioner S R Ladhar and even produced a CD of the conversation with the cop.
Harbinder said she was being pressurized by some Akali leaders and her real brother Gurjinder Singh to strike a compromise on the issue and to share the Rs 2.5 lakh given to her by Congress MLAs to continue her studies. When contacted, Jagjit admitted to have written the letter and even reiterated that he would not side with his cousin if she continued to pursue the issue against Gurmit. The sub-inspector was not at fault, he claimed and added that he would rather make public the recording of the girl’s father, in which he had purportedly admitted that taxi drivers had not harassed her. Jagjit even claimed that the voice in the CD was not his and that it was doctored. He said he was tutored to give the statement to a section of the media on June 25 so that Harbinder and her family could demand a fresh inquiry, other than the one being conducted by Ladhar.
In the letter, he has asked Harbinder and her father to consult their advocate and Nimsha Mehta on the issue and that if they wanted to pursue the complaint against Gurmit, then he would back the suspended cop.
