Suspecting infidelity, Punjabi Man kills wife in Brunswick

UPDATE: Brunswick West man Parminder Singh, 29, confessed to stabbing his wife Nikita Chawla to death in a jealous rage because of suspicions she was unfaithful.

Parminder Singh, 29, killed 23-year-old Nikita Chawla after checking her mobile phone, which he believed confirmed his suspicions about her infidelity, Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard.

Nikita Chawla, 23, was stabbed to death inside her Brunswick apartment.

He allegedly called triple zero around 1.30am and admitted to repeatedly stabbing his wife with a knife.

The Brunswick West man was arrested in the vicinity of his Waxman Pde home and charged with one count of murder today.

The muscular Mr Singh appeared in court for a brief filing hearing, where Magistrate John Doherty noted it was his first time in custody and arranged for a mental health assessment to take place.

His lawyer advised the court Mr Singh had previously seen a psychiatrist for anxiety issues.

CCTV footage, DNA and forensic evidence will be analysed and served as part of a brief of evidence.

Mr Singh was remanded him in custody until a mention hearing on May 1.

Homicide detective Sergeant Mark Hatt said the woman had sustained upper body injuries.

Sgt Hatt said the victim and Mr Singh — both of whom are Indian — had been in a relationship.

The woman’s family is yet to be notified of her death.

Mr Singh was arrested on the Albion St overpass of the CityLink Tollway.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics were called to a property on the street for “a woman reportedly dead” and discovered the body.

A forensics unit is combing the red brick unit for evidence.

A part of Waxman Pde to Yarrabin St was blocked off while homicide detectives investigated.

Residents in the street were shocked to wake to the grim news.

Dominic, 81, who did not want his surname published, said he heard about the death on the radio just after waking up.

“It’s not very nice,” he said. “It’s too close to home.”

Another woman on Waxman Pde, who wished to remain anonymous, said through tears that she was “really freaked out”.
