SIC, California, plans to demonstrate outside Cerritos City Hall this Saturday, to show their opposition of a local statue depicting Mahatma Gandhi.
The 6-foot-tall bronze statue of Gandhi sits outside on the southwest corner of Alondra Boulevard and Carmenita Road and was installed in April 2012, according to the city’s website.  It sits on a pedestal, lighted at night.
The Organization for Minorities of India (OFMI) will gather outside city hall beginning at 11 a.m.,according to news reports.
In a recent open letter from the group to Mayor Bruce W. Barrows, OFMI called for the statue to be removed because of its extreme distaste.
“Gandhi is an historical figure whose personal life and social endeavors are morally odious,” the letter states.  “We represent South Asian Americans in the Cerritos region (as well as throughout CA, the USA, and abroad) who are deeply offended by civic celebration of a man whose legacy is so repugnant to the American way of life.”
The letter goes on to point out five main reasons the group is disgusted by Gandhi, including the alleged sexual abuse of his grandnieces.
According to other news reports, the group feels the city has not adequately responded to their request, and is the reason they are planning the demonstration.
