MELBOURNE – Finally Victoria is introducing short-term rego payments for vehicle owners.

The Andrews Labor Government is reducing the stress of car registration costs for Victorian families, introducing flexible, short-term options for rego payments.

From January 1 next year, owners of cars, utes, vans, motorcycles and other light vehicles will be able to pay their registration in three-month and six-month installments.

An average three-month registration will be $200.20, and the average payment for six months will be $400.40.

At the moment, car owners have to fork out an average of more than $800 in a lump payment to register their vehicle.

Roads and road safety minister Luke Donnellan said the plan would take pressure off of individual budgets.

Having to find more than $800 once a year puts a lot of people under financial pressure – by introducing shorter term payments, we’re giving people a chance to spread the cost of owning a car out over the whole year,” he said.

Victoria processes 5.6 million registration renewals each year, including 4.47 million light vehicles.
