A PERTH aviation worker sacked for posting pro-Islamic State messages on Facebook has had his airside security access reinstated after gaining work with another air services company.
Nirmal Singh faced the Fair Work Commission to argue unfair dismissal by previous employer Aerocare, and seek $7000 in lost wages.
The Commission heard Mr Singh had written “We All Support ISIS” above a shared post from HT (Hizb ut-Tahrir) Australia about the shooting of police account Curtis Cheng by Islamic youth Farhad Khalil Mohammad Jabar in Sydney.
There were five posts in total that concerned Aerocare, two of which included pictures of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Posts made under alias on Facebook
The commission heard Mr Singh had been dismissed from Aerocare for misconduct.
Mr Singh had set up a Facebook profile using the name Sherry Solus Singh, using his own photo.
He told the commission he had ‘liked’ the Facebook page of radical Muslim group Hizb Ut-Tahrir, and shared a post about a demonstration in Lakemba.
Counsel for Aerocare said Mr Singh also posted “We all support ISIS” with no emojis.
But Mr Singh said he opposed religious extremism and his “support” claim was meant to be taken as sarcastic.
He was subsequently told by Aerocare management he would be stood down on full pay during an investigation and told the posts “could tarnish Aerocare’s brand”.
His Aviation Security Identification Card was also temporarily taken from him.
However, when the card was returned he got a similar job with another airport services company.
Commissioner Jennifer Hunt said she would consider written submissions before making a decision.
