New Delhi: While 40 Indians workers remained abducted by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, six other Indians all from Punjab returned safely from the war-ridden Iraq on Thursday night. All the six affirmed the exacerbating situation in the country, which led them to return to their homeland.
All six who were working as carpenters or drivers in Iraq, returned to their native city Gurdaspur in Punjab yesterday. They appealed to the Indian government to take some substantial measures for the release of the kidnapped Indians and make their return to the country feasible. There are about 10,000 Indians living across Iraq and about 120 of them are said to be trapped in the violence-hit areas of the country, including the 40 kidnapped, who hail mainly from the state of Punjab and Kerala.
With the Sunni militants having already captured the towns of Mosul and Tikrit, the war is currently on for control of the country’s biggest oil refinery, Baiji. The just returned six Indians from Iraq said that the militants are very close to capturing Baghdad, adding that the people there are petrified and situation is worsening with time.
